Supporting Families with the Healthy Start Programme
At Banana Moon Bromley, we are committed to supporting families in every way we can, including helping parents access vital health and nutrition programmes. One such scheme is the Healthy Start programme, a government initiative designed to provide extra support to families during pregnancy and early childhood.
What is the Healthy Start Programme?
The Healthy Start programme offers financial help to buy healthy food such as milk, fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables, and infant formula. It also provides free vitamin supplements to eligible pregnant women and children under four. The aim is to improve nutrition and health outcomes for families who need extra support.
Who is Eligible?
You may be eligible for Healthy Start if you are at least 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old, and you receive certain qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit, Income Support, or Child Tax Credit. Young parents under 18 may also qualify automatically.
How Does it Work?
Once you apply and are accepted, you will receive a prepaid Healthy Start card every four weeks. This card can be used in many supermarkets and shops across the UK to purchase eligible healthy foods. You can also get free Healthy Start vitamins from your local health visitor or pharmacy.
How much you’ll get?
You’ll get money added onto your Healthy Start card every 4 weeks.
You’ll get:
£4.25 each week of your pregnancy from the 10th week
£8.50 each week for children from birth to 1 year old
£4.25 each week for children between 1 and 4 years old
How to Apply
If you prefer, you can also ask your midwife, health visitor, or local children’s centre for help with your application.
