Keeping Cool and Covered at Banana Moon Bromley
At Banana Moon Bromley, we love seeing the children enjoying the sunshine. Whether they’re exploring the mud kitchen, playing in the secret garden or relaxing with a book outdoors, being outside is a big part of our daily routine. But with warmer weather comes stronger UV rays, and it’s important that everyone stays protected while having fun.
🌿 Sun Safety is Part of Our Everyday
We apply sun cream to all children before they go outside. We use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply it as needed, especially after water play or on particularly hot days. We also ask parents to apply sun cream at home in the morning so children are protected from the moment they arrive.
All children must bring a clearly named sun hat to nursery. We don’t recommend baseball caps as they don’t protect the neck or ears. Instead, we ask for wide-brimmed, bucket or legionnaire-style hats. These give much better coverage and help keep little ones cool too.
Outdoor play is adjusted on hot days, especially between 11am and 3pm, when UV levels are highest. Children play in shaded areas and we check UV levels each day. One child is chosen as our UV Monitor, helping to raise awareness in a fun and age-appropriate way.
🌞 Sun Safe Accreditation Renewed
We’re proud to share that we have successfully renewed our Sun Safe Nurseries Accreditation. This national programme supports nurseries in promoting UV awareness and skin safety in early years, and we are proud to continue meeting their high standards.
As part of our continued commitment, we’ve adopted extra measures:
- If a child doesn’t have a hat, they will either be offered a spare or asked to play indoors.
- We have spare hats and sunscreen on hand just in case.
- Our team checks the UV index every morning and adapts the day accordingly.
We also follow NHS and Cancer Research UK guidance around skin protection and long-term sun exposure. For more information, take a look at:
💧 Keeping Everyone Comfortable
Sun safety isn’t just about hats and cream. We make sure children have access to fresh drinking water throughout the day and provide individual water bottles for each child. These are topped up regularly and kept close by, especially during outdoor play and physical activities.
Babies are always kept in the shade where possible, and we encourage everyone to wear light cotton clothing that covers shoulders and helps prevent sunburn.
We also have air conditioning throughout the nursery, including in our outdoor classroom, which means children can always find a cool, calm space to enjoy activities away from the heat. Whether indoors or out, they stay comfortable and safe throughout the day.
💛 Working Together
Thank you to all our families for continuing to support our sun safety approach. Bringing hats and applying sun cream at home helps us keep everyone protected and feeling their best during the summer months.
Together, we can enjoy the sunshine safely and make the most of this lovely time of year.
